Life Changes Bring Tax Changes

Welcoming a new baby or taking in an older dependent drastically alters your tax situation. It opens the door to significant credits, changes your filing status, and requires specific documentation to prove eligibility to the IRS. Navigating these rules carefully ensures you receive the maximum refund you are legally entitled to.

The Essential Documentation

For any new dependent claimed on your return, the IRS requires strict identification. You must bring:

  • Their Social Security Card: This is non-negotiable. If you haven't received the physical card yet, you must bring the official letter containing the SSN. A hospital birth record is not sufficient for the tax return itself.
  • Date of Birth: Exact date of birth to calculate age-out limits for child tax credits.

The Child Tax Credit (CTC)

The CTC is one of the most powerful tax benefits available to parents, effectively reducing your tax liability dollar-for-dollar for qualifying children under age 17. As long as we input the correct SSN and verify they lived with you for more than half the year, the credit will be applied based on your income phase-out limits.

Child and Dependent Care Credit

If you pay for daycare, after-school care, or a nanny so that you (and your spouse) can go to work or look for work, you may qualify for this specific credit. It is separate from the CTC. To claim it, you must bring:

  • The total amount paid to the care provider during the year.
  • The care provider's Name, Address, and their Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number. We cannot claim the credit without this identifying information.

Adoption Credits

If you adopted a child this year, the IRS offers a substantial non-refundable tax credit for qualified adoption expenses (court costs, agency fees, travel). Please bring all finalized legal adoption papers and an itemized list of related expenses.
